- MOORSIDE RED V TORNADOES
Saturday 9th February, Moorside High, KO 10am, League.
After several weeks of an enforced absence from football, due to an over cautious local authority, it was good to get the boys back in action.
Sadly for us though it was on a 3G pitch in a force 9 hurricane! This meant it took a good 15 or so minutes for the boys to settle and find their feet in the tricky conditions. Unfortunately by that stage we found ourselves 2 goals down.
However, once the initial bad start was over, I felt we steadily grew in to the game and as it progressed so too did our possession and tally of chances created.
Despite the loss, after 50 minutes of play, I think we deserved at least a draw and on the whole we were the better, stronger team and we created the most chances.
Overall, I'm pleased with the performance and above all the attitude. However, I was alarmed at times by the lack of urgency. This was especially noticeable with our opponents thrown ins (we were slow to mark and they were quick to take) and goal kicks. With goal kicks they pressed us straight away, whereas we let them have free rein. This is basic stuff and may have cost us two early goals.
I don't want to sound bitter, but I feel we were extremely harshly treated by the referee, particularly Stewart. For me it was heart breaking to see him substituting himself because he couldn't stop crying after being booked!
If you add in the ball being blown off the line by the wind, after a narrow angled shot from Josh, a clear penalty for Stewart being turned down and the exemplary ability of our opponent's goal keeper (did you see his save from Josh's brilliant narrow angled volley?)... you have, no pun intended, the perfect storm!
At the end of the game, everyone of my players said we should've won that game. That says volumes for me and tells me that they've got the right ideas.
Well done on Stewart getting our consolation goal and well done on everyone for getting the team MOTM award. We just need to remember our basics!
