- TORNADOES V WINTON DEVILS
Saturday 24th April, Beech Farm, 10am, League.
What a joy! What a relief, What a display. Superb from start to finish.
Last week I said that we'd had a few bad games. I said that we needed to move on, work hard and respond to these setbacks.
That challenge was set, Richard and Wayne set to work and the lads answered us. Hopefully now they'll begin to realise that football is about what you do with your head, as much as what you do with your feet!
Attitude, effort, concentration, application. These are just as needed as a 50 yard dribble, as a defence splitting pass, as a chip over the keeper etc, etc, etc. You get my drift. The boys played as a team, they worked together as a team and they got their rewards.
Playing uphill in the first spell, Stewart got the ball rolling with his first of four. Strong running, quick passing, brilliant work rate and superb vision, Stewart had a field day!
Another stand out display came from Oscar, who scored a hat trick. I especially enjoyed his quick feet at the edge of area to fashion some space, before unleashing a Tornado bolt high in to the keeper's top left.
And what about their keeper? I thought he was excellent and but for him, we'd have had about 15 goals.
Also on the score sheet were Logan, who showed great reflexes to pounce on a rare mistake from the Devils stopper. Reece too, got among the goals with a powerful, low, well placed shot in the second period.
Other stand out displays were the defensive unit who restricted Winton to one goal and a few chances.
The midfield also, regardless of personnel changes kept the ball moving and played some lovely passing football. And that was what, above all, pleased me most. The passing and moving and passion in our play was evident and ultimately we dominated that match in the last 20 mins.
Essentially we did to our opponents what had been done to us in our last 2 matches and won the game by not letting up and forcing our opposition to drop their heads.
Sheer force of will, mind over matter, call it what you will, as a coach you can see it and you can sense it. Once we got our third goal the 3 points were assured!
Finally, I have to mention that the pressing from our lads, when the Devils had a goal kick, was truly impressive. We've got to keep that up. As you can see it paid a lot of dividends. However, we'll need to be quicker at setting ourselves against higher standard teams. Winton Devils were very slow at their goal kicks and that allowed us to really force them back with our man to man marking. We won't get the same time in our next game against Winton Warriors. We're still a bit slow with concentration and we'll need to organise ourselves quicker to get the same benefits.
Overall though, brilliant stuff boys and a very special mention to our MOTM Reece, who showed fantastic maturity, especially in the second half, when he really got his passing going. And what a difference that made!
