The few leaves dotted around the home pitch gave a hint of the season, a stark change from the drought fallen leaves of the summer. The resident Musket creating panic amongst the pigeons whilst patrolling the skies above in anticipation of a passerine breaking cover across the open ground. A perfect morning for hunting, and football, lightning was out for both!
A limited warm up with only 2 players actually on time, frustrating but adding important numbers to the 'fines' board for end of season party!
With some shaping tweaks from the previous game, the Beechy Boys started strong, closing down attacks and using the ball well, when in possession.
Bobby the brave, solid in net, focused and quick out to the threats with excellent distribution giving his defenders confidence and composure. Some superb saves and back to his two hands following injury.
Alvin faced a real challenge in defence with some special attacking from the Aces and he not only won his battles, but he also quickly turned them into an attack, flying through their Team and finding his passes, a difficult day to select a MOTM but Alvin got the vote, superb performance.
Bodie, carrying a toe injury, fought through the pain and was cooler than the cow on the Inspiral Carpets bottles of milk! Superb throughout, really developing his timing and passing throughout the summer, was able to thwart off attacks, win the ball, calmly move forward, look up and find his pass, he's also getting that thirst for the scoresheet following last years GOTS and is the Team example for behaviour and focus, ensuring the lads are tuned in and ready to go when required.
Angelo, unable to start through injury eventually found his dancing feet again and demanded a run out where he also timed his tackles well and found his passes. Reliably covering the back line enabling others to push up and pressure the opposition in their half.
Brayden repeatedly winning the ball across the park, linking up superbly and seamlessly covering where required was left unmarked and with what he is famous for; controlled the ball and pinged it into the back of the net, superb goal following multiple missed chances from the Team to settle everyone down. A classic Bray goal.
Finley, not only holding his own but winning most of his challenges and spreading the ball round like a pro, in some cases better! Great to watch and also finding a superbly worked goal he thoroughly deserved. His skill at changing direction and switching play enabling attacks with one - two's and long pings will only get better, a nightmare for the opposition to play against. I think he enjoyed that today!
Toby, settling into the team like he has been here for years gave that fight and desire in the right manner, he is becoming known for, seamlessly linking up with the players, covering where required, a threat on goal and a menace in midfield. Very unlucky not to get on the scoresheet but clearly thoroughly loving the challenge and Team camaraderie.
Elliot, facing up against a multitude of players who seemed to swarm to block his attacks, managed to time and time again win the ball, beat the players, and find his shot or pass. His speed and desire to also get back and help his Teammates was a joy to watch. Another unlucky to get on the scoresheet! Elliots natural athleticism and desire was really required today against some high-level players and even through some bad frustrated Aces challenges, he got up, recovered and went at it again. Brilliant.
Up front Moroti (Mo), his speed, physical presence, never give up attitude and big smile epitomised the enjoyment the lads are getting from working hard in training, bringing that through to the games and having that real Team spirit and being part of something special. Always a threat, covering the ground like the sparrowhawk mentioned above, creating that panic amongst the opposition, forcing mistakes and getting his goal to ensure a great lead and secure a great win for the Beechy Boys!
The passing football and confidence against a rapid well-versed team showed the summer efforts from the boys, coaches and parents are paying off. The multiple perfect storm of issues from last season seem a lifetime away. The lads are continuing to develop and have loads more to come.
