- Late goal enough to secure Hurricanes' win!
U9 Hurricanes (Home) v Salford Utd FC Vipers
Saturday 24th March 2018 (10.00am)
Beech Farm Playing Fields #2, Shelley Rd, M27 0PB
Referee: Lucas McLaughlin
Won: 1-0 (HT 0-0)
MotM: Dillan Caldwell
In their second Supplementary Cup group match, the Hurriances had their second meeting in a month with the Salford United Vipers. Their previous encounter had been a tight, tense 0-0 stalemate and this time Beechfield were missing their top goal-scorer Daniel Robinson due to illness.
However, the home time started the game well, having taken confidence from their recent run of results, and the first half proved to be an end-to-end affair with high quality football being played by both sides. Each team was well-organised and working hard, with defences coming out on top as the tie remained goalless at half time.
Positive and inspirational words were needed from both managers at half time as both teams pushed forward in the second half in an attempt to secure the opening goal. Jai Devani-White came desperately close to giving Beechfield the lead, as his chip beat the keeper but agonisingly hit the far post before being scrambled clear by some desperate Vipers’ defending.
The Hurricanes were beginning to look more likely to score but, as they pushed further forward, Salford posed a significant threat on the counter attack. Both ‘keepers made good saves as the good looked to be heading towards another no-score draw. However, after another Beechfield attack broke down in the final third of the pitch, the ball came out to Dillan Caldwell just outside the box and he fired home an absolute rocket of a shot into the top corner, past the desperate dive of the helpless Vipers’ keeper.
This sparked Salford into all-out attack in an attempt to secure an equaliser but Man of the Match Dillan Caldwell and the rest of the Hurricanes’ defence put their bodies on the line to keep a number of late chances and secure the win, and a fifth consecutive clean sheet, for the home team.
After the game, manager Ben Robinson said " I can't praise the boys enough today, we were up against a very strong Salford United Vipers team. After our last league game being a 0-0 stalemate, I knew this Cup game wouldn't have many goals in it and could go either way. In the first half we were on the back foot and having to defend to stop their attacks, but Beechy came out the stronger team in the second half and had the better chances. I can't take anything away from Salford, they are a very well organised team and Beechy had to be on top form to get the win. Well done again lads, and parents for your commitment too. Well done Dillan for MotM".
The Hurricanes squad for the match was: Oliver Dalton-Bunker, Joshua Whitehead, Jamie Maher, Alfie Latham, Oliver Hall, Matthew Elliott, Dillan Caldwell, Jaiesh Devani-White, Presley Smith, Sean Cosgrove.
