POSTED: December 21 2020 11:10:43. By Wayne Miller - CROMPTON BLUES V THUNDER

Saturday 19th December, Crompton Cricket Club, KO 12pm, League.

On Saturday, Thunder traveled to the heart of Lancashire to play their final league fixture of 2020.

In an absolute ding dong game, on a pudding of a pitch, Thunder performed extremely well and pushed our opponents for the full 80 minutes of the match.

That we didn't come away with at least a draw is heart breaking and there's no way that the 5-3 scoreline is a fair reflection of the match.

Crompton were tough and their virtually square shaped pitch meant that we couldn't exploit the pace of Prince that we would normally at SSV.

Added in to the mix was a lack of subs for us, so it was no surprise that the boys ended the first half 3-1 in arrears.

However, with immense character we dug in, in the second spell, and managed to even the scores up with 10 minutes to go.

When the Thunder get in to their stride, play as a unit and move the ball around there really isn't any better sight!

Therefore, Wayne and I were very impressed with the boys' attitude, determination and ability to claw ourselves back in to the game and make it a genuine contest.

At half time, Wayne cautioned the lads that the game was in the balance, it was there for the taking and they responded to that. And although we didn't pick up any points, what pleased us most was the style of football and the amount of chances created.

There were some outstanding displays on the park: Prince notched a brace and Sam was just everywhere, dictating the play. Luke is starting to grow in confidence and you can see that he's starting to express himself a bit more, going on great penetrating runs. Dom and Harvey were excellent in midfield and complement each other magnificently. Dom provides the graft, whilst Harvey provides the guile. It was like rolling back the years for me watching Harvey putting countless through balls in to our strikers feet. Harvey also scored our second goal.

The defensive unit were also great with Reiss, Lucas, Kon, Taylor and Andrew all looking very solid. However MOTM had to go Lee, whose willingness to throw his body on the line definitely saved us on several occasions! Lee, like Luke, is a new player but his effort and work rate will ensure that he becomes a mainstay in this team.

Overall then, a good way to see out 2020 and let's hope that we can kick on in 2021. Well done boys and Merry Christmas.
Oscar
