Flixton Cougars 2 (4 pen) - 2 (5 pen) Typhoon
Well we got away with one here! This was the third round of the cup, though actually the first game we’d played in it. We were up against a mid table Section E team, so could be reasonably confident. We were already without Igor and an ill Reece and it became apparent in the warmup that Sam was struggling and he only lasted 10 minutes of the game.
Our passing has come on leaps and bounds this season but sometimes I think the fact we train and play on Astroturf is a problem when you get back on to bobbly mud/grass pitches. Either way, playing up the hill we struggled to get our attacking momentum going whilst we looked exceedingly vulnerable to balls over the top that they could sprint downhill and chase. We’d had a few let offs, Peter making one great save, before Milonga put us ahead from a corner. We were in profligate mode, yet again, with the ball more often than not, flying over the bar. In a bit of a goalmouth scramble we had 3 great chances to score but couldn’t find the back of the net, they broke away and equalised. We promptly conceded again from another break with yet another ball over the top to go in trailing 2-1 at halftime.
Pete was livid and tore into them and we hoped for an improvement in the second half. Kicking downhill we huffed and puffed but were lacking composure and couldn’t seem to get going properly. Flixton were challenging for everything and belying their league position. One thing going for the boys was that they didn’t give up, kept their heads up and kept searching for the equaliser. Ryan O started to push up and as the seconds counted down Milonga joined him. Thankfully in the final minute the ball broke to Milonga who chipped the keeper from the edge of the box to wild celebrations.
The game went to penalties and five bravely volunteered for the task. It’s not a great way to finish a tight game, someone’s going to feel awful at the end but thankfully it wasn’t a Typhoon player this time round. Peter saved the first spot kick and nearly pulled off a wonderful save for the second but one was enough. In order, Jamie, Ronan, Ryan O (much better than last week Ryan!), Sonny and Will slotted home comfortably to win the match.
Milonga was unanimously voted the man of the match for his goal scoring heroics.
We might have been rather lucky but they kept going and it’s onwards to the quarter final.
