Due to unforseen circumstances this match finally kicked off late and with the Tornadoes only having 9 players to select. Therefore, in an act of much appreciated sportsmanship, Wayne the manager of Thunder, agreed to make the contest even and only fielded 9 players himself!
Although these team had played each other countless times, and with various players having turned out for both teams over the years, it did feel rather surreal to be playing each other in a proper competitive game.
As it was, it was Thunder who got off to a cracking start, streaking ahead early on, to take a 0 - 5 lead, without reply, eventually stretching it to 1-7. Taonga, Prince, Reece, Jacob, Ishor and Dominic were all particularly impressing.
As for the Tornadoes, we were finding it difficult to get up to the pace of the game and were obviously struggling with the size of the pitch too.
However, as the game progressed, the Tornadoes started to get their composure together and began to make in roads in to the Thunder half of the pitch. Alan, Jamie and Ronan all spurned several half chances before Alan finally found the net, to pull a goal back before half time.
The second period saw a multitude of changes for the Thunder as the Tornadoes picked up where they left off, with Alan finding the net again, early in the second half.
After Alan's second, there was to be no further goals in the game for either team, but I'm heartened by the response from the Tornadoes. We took the game to the Thunder, especially after the interval, and we played with confidence and determination.
Undaunted by the fact that a minor miracle would be needed, to overhaul a 5 goal deficit, we battled on creating plenty of chances, with Brandon now pushing further forward setting up Ronan and Alan with stacks of opportunities.
But for the brilliant display of Reece, and his Thunder defence, the scoreline may well have been a bit closer.
Overall then, the whole of the Tornadoes team deserve special praise for a second half shut out, but MOTM had to go to Brandon. He followed his coaches' instructions to the letter and effectively played like two men. Brandon's drive, work rate, commitment and range of passing was magnificent!
