Typhoon 10 (ten) - 1 Flixton Cougars
After last week’s mauling we couldn’t have asked for a better match up. Flixton are bottom of the table and could only field nine players, whilst we had a full complement of four subs.
The pitch was quite heavy but the sun was out and it was a lovely morning for football.
Pete had already commented on the flatness of the warm up and we took that attitude onto the pitch. Though better than Flixton we were very sloppy and it was a reasonably even game. Reece finally made the breakthrough half way into the half, smashing in a long range effort shortly after being taken to task for trying something similar when there were plenty of other, better options. We failed to kick on from here and Flixton managed an equaliser with half time approaching. I’m not going to say how frustrated Pete was! Thankfully we finally moved up a gear, Daniel put us back in the lead following in a shot and Sonny pretty much killed the game off with a third just before the interval.
Discussions at half time were about upping our energy levels and using the ball better, as we were still very flat.
Sonny added another as we still struggled to find our rhythm but it was enough to break their resistance. Flixton were tired and beaten and, unfortunately, threw in the towel and we ran riot. Joseph bagged a brace as did Reece for his hat trick, Sonny got his third and Sam rounded off the scoring just before the final whistle. We could have had more, we hit the post several times and the boys started glory hunting instead of playing as a team.
I know I shouldn’t be too critical of the boys, seeing as we won by such a large margin but I can’t say, hand on heart, that we played particularly well. Having so many subs does disrupt things, when we got the ball out wide to Cole and Daniel we looked threatening but we could have done it more, our discipline in midfield wasn’t great and we weren’t working back when we lost the ball.
We tried moving Sonny into the defence and that worked very well. He added a calmness to the play and either cleared it a long way upfield our passed it out. This makes such a difference, just ask Pep Gladiola, and with his hat trick he was an easy choice for man of the match. Reece will just have to pick a better week to get another one.
All in all, I suppose it was a nice way to balance up last week and get the confidence back up. We must try and kick on from here for the rest of the season.
