Typhoon 6 - 2 Lightning
Perhaps we should play on a Tuesday night more often!
It was a beautiful day for a game of football with plenty of sun and enough wind to help cool the players. Beech farm’s mud had solidified to something approaching concrete, thee must be a Goldilocks period of about two days when it’s pleasant underfoot.
Anyway, we knew what was coming for the second derby of the season and I thought the boys were better prepared than last time. Lightning were quick off the blocks but this time we matched them and Charlie gave us an early lead. Lightning equalised despite a great save from Peter with some pretty horrid miscommunication at the back. The game was tight and end to end but Harley “fulfilled his destiny” and scored with a header despite someone trying to kick his head off. Some of Lightning’s players were starting to argue amongst themselves and with their coach, As they struggled to make inroads against our defence. At some point here we hit the bar as well, so went in 2-1 up at half time. It had been a cracking and tight half but I thought we shaded it.
We rammed home how we had to keep concentration and stop them from scoring, which would allow us to put pressure on them. Sure enough, more miscommunication at the start of the second half resulted in a good break and Peter was powerless to stop them equalising again. Now this was a pivotal time in the game. Would the boys collapse or pull themselves back together? Pete was beside himself beside me but the boys were up for it. Good work from Ronan led to a chance for Joe, which he buried. His finishing has come on leaps and bounds recently in training and it showed. This seemed to really gee up our boys and saw Lightning’s heads go down. We were then treated to a magnificent performance for the rest of the game with further goals for Cole, Joe and Sam to put a real gloss on the scoreline. As a last act Jamie nearly broke the crossbar with a thunderbolt, it would have been the goal of the season.
I thought all the boys really contributed:
Peter made some great saves and a couple of clearances
Harry was very solid at the back and produced a great covering tackle, it was just a shame his sore heal limited his playing time
Milo was at his colossal best
Freddie was battling with Milo and nearly scored towards the end.
Cole started slowly but really played his way into the game and was well goal by the finish
Daniel made some telling runs, provided a lovely cross and also a covering tackle
Ronan was disappointed with himself for not scoring but kept battling hard and was key in the pivotal goal.
Joseph was just fantastic, never shirking a challenge and popping up with a brace for good measure
Charlie ran Lightning ragged, especially in the first half.
Jamie can’t buy a goal at the moment but was big and strong and led the line really well.
Sam really started to shine in the second half, he found a bit more room and used it to play the ball around.
My man of the match was Harley, who I thought had his best ever game. He switched between left wing and fullback but was fully concentrated for the entire game. He made good inroads down the flank and capped it off with his goal. Took a while for his smile to come of after that!
All in all it was a great result from a great performance. Lightning are a decent side as they showed in the first 40 minutes but once we went up a gear they found life hard.
Well done Typhoon
