The Hurricanes squad (and parents!) had an early morning meet-up at their home clubhouse to receive this season’s brand new playing kits, thanks to shirt sponsor The HorseShoe, Ringley. The squad proudly wore their new strip as they braved the awful weather, brought on by Storm Callum, to visit nearby rivals Deans. Thankfully the weather eased up slightly as the game began, and the Hurricanes made a promising start, although Deans ‘keeper was clearly in good form as he made a number of good saves to deny the visitors taking an early lead.
As the first half wore on, Deans had a chance of their own which Beechfield ‘keeper Oliver Dalton-Bunker came out to smother. The visitors then quickly turned attack into defence as Dillan Caldwell broke strongly down the right and fed the ball into Oliver Hall, who provided a smart pass into the box for Alfie Rostron, who confidently slammed home his eleventh goal of the season to put the Hurricanes in front.
Alfie almost doubled his tally just moments later as he out-muscled the home defender, burst into the box and forced another excellent save from the Panther’s goalkeeper, who was undoubtedly their man of the match. As Beechfield began to exert their dominance, the coaching team of Ben Robinson and Glenn Whitehead decided to make their first changes of the game, with Henry Errington, Jamie Maher, Oliver Williams and Daniel Robinson coming on for Amaan Khan, Joshua Whitehead, Fabio Figueiredo and Dillan Caldwell, who had all run their socks off in the opening exchanges.
This change almost immediately paid off as another ball into the box found Alfie Rostron, who still had a lot to do, but some brilliant footwork put him past the last line of defence as he cleverly fired in his second goal of the game. He almost made it three just before the half time whistle as Henry Errington played the ball out to Jamie Maher, who crossed into the box and Alfie Rostron’s half-volley flew just inches over the bar.
The two-goal lead was no more than the visitor deserved but it could easily have been more, but for the terrible weather and superb goalkeeping. Some wise words from Ben Robinson and Glenn Whitehead at half time, along with a sugar-rush from some half-time donuts, propelled the Hurricanes out for a strong second half performance against arguably the best opposition they’d faced this season.
The visitors started brightly again but Deans still presented a threat on the counter-attack, especially with the strong wind at their backs. A half chance for the home team went narrowly wide but Oliver Dalton-Bunker’s goal-kick started a brilliant footballing move as Oliver Hall drove forward from the back, rolled the ball to Henry Errington who played a great one-two with Joshua Whitehead before feeding the ball to man of the match Daniel Robinson who lobbed the on-rushing ‘keeper with his third goal in the last two games. Daniel almost doubled his personal tally just moments later as he forced another good save, following a 1-on-1 with the home ‘keeper.
The strong winds were definitely helping the home team in the second half, but some equally strong performances in midfield from Amaan Khan, Oliver Williams, Dillan Caldwell and Josh Whitehead helped to limit the Panther’s chances. On the odd occasion that Deans did manage to break through, Fabio Figueiredo snuffed out any chances with a superb performance at the back, and Oliver Dalton-Bunker calmly protected his clean sheet in the visitor’s goal.
The final goal of the afternoon again started with the Hurricanes’ ‘keeper (who is yet to concede a goal this season) as he rolled the ball to Oliver Hall, who broke forward down the right before feeding the ball out wide to Jamie Maher. Jamie whipped another dangerous cross into the box which found Alfie Rostron whose used his strength and determination to scramble the ball into the back of the net to complete an impressive hattrick with his thirteenth goal of the season, in just his fifth game.
After the match Hurricanes’ manager Ben Robinson said “One of the best days for me at Beechfield in over 3 years. From early morning with players trying out their new kits, and all the parents making it to the clubhouse to take part in the photoshoot, to playing away against Deans, who I thought played a lot better than our last encounter, especially with a very brave keeper in goal. We showed that we will still find a way to score and that the chances will come with hard work”.
Ben also added “I’m extremely proud of the team’s effort and determination, and it was great for us all to get together after the game and applaud the team for their hard work, and announce we are being promoted to Division 2! We deserve to be playing at a higher level and I'm am very confident we will challenge any team and prove to be a hard test in any future fixtures. A massive thanks again to Steph and her mum for our sponsorship and new kit, and to Patricia for the half time refreshments! Thanks again parents for your commitment, I'm sure that once the new fixtures go up, our matches are only going to get more exciting to watch.
