Storm began this seasons cup campaign with a home game against a Baguley team that had beaten Beechy in the opening weeks of the league season.
From the first whistle Storm pressed high winning the ball back deep in the Baguley half, a pass out the wing saw a fantastic cross from Fin and a near miss from our striker Charlie. A sign of things to come?
For the next five minutes the teams were evenly matched, possession changing hands frequently as both teams tried to take control of the game. Some clever build up play by Storm saw Jacob pick the ball up outside the Baguley box a snap shot caught the keeper off guard and rolled into the bottom corner giving Storm the lead. Baguley kicked off and immediately began looking for an equaliser. Some great forward play saw their striker through on goal and a tidy finish followed for the equaliser.
Storm continued with their passing game and pushed forward, under sustained pressure Baguley were doing everything they could to keep the ball out of the net. Some great defending and a fantastic clearance saw Baguley through on goal again. The chasing defenders doing everything to try and catch up, unfortunately a coming together in the box saw a Baguley penalty awarded. 1st half Stand in keeper Abe stood strong and made the initial penalty save followed by a brilliant follow up to take the ball away from approaching Baguley players.
Once again Storm reset and began to find more space down the wings. Some brilliant play from Sonny and Fin saw another 3 Storm chances but the Baguley keeper was up to the task and kept them at bay. This trend continued for the remainder for the half until a lucky break away saw the Baguley forward through on goal with no defenders in sight. A cool finish saw Storm finish the half a goal down.
The second half saw Rocky returning to his familiar position in goal following a rotational stint in defence during the first half. This now meant Storm had all players available in their preferred positions and they used that brilliantly. Creating space and width the team set about looking for an equaliser. Calm and collected defending from Lucas and Corey kept the Baguley forwards at bay and anything that did get through was expertly saved by Rocky between the posts. Jacob continued his brilliant distribution from the first half in midfield and a combination of Abe, Sonny and Fin on the wings meant Charlie up front had lots of chances to work with.
As time ticked down Storm were camped in the Baguley half creating chance after chance when finally with 3 mins to go Charlie found himself in front of an open goal, a low shot was smashed into the net for the equaliser. Not settling for the draw Storm pushed on again but were nearly caught on the counter. A smart save from Rocky keeping the score level. With time ticking away 1 final chance was created. A shot from Sonny saw a save from the Baguley keeper. The ball bobbled out to the feet of Charlie who calmly chipped the ball over the advancing goalkeeper and defenders for a winning Storm goal. The players made their way to the middle of the pitch to be greeted by the final whistle!!
Absolutely magnificent effort from the boys!! All of them fought for every ball. Even when going behind they kept their heads up and pushed for goals. It’s was nice to see their hard work rewarded with their first cup win! On to match day 2!
Managers Player of the Match - Abe, brilliant in net for the first half and fantastic on the wings in the second.
Parents Player of the Match - Charlie, two outstanding second half goals that secured the win!
