The morning began under a bitter chill, with a freezing cold air hanging over the pitch as preparations got underway. As the goals were set up and the lines marked out, there was a sense of anticipation building. Fortunately, just as the lads got into their warm-up, the sun began to break through, lifting both the temperature and the energy levels across the squad.
We lined up in a new formation, sprung on the players at the last minute. It was a calculated decision, one we felt would give us the best opportunity to compete in what we expected to be a tight and hard-fought battle in midfield — especially against opposition who have spent much of the season playing one or even two tiers above.
From the first whistle, the game started brightly. We imposed ourselves early, beginning to overpower the opposition and carving out a number of promising chances. However, the first real moment of danger came against us in a one-on-one situation. It was superbly dealt with — Leo tracked back brilliantly as the final defender, and with Cormac closing the angle, the attacker was forced wide, sending his effort past the post.
Cormac was outstanding throughout, producing a number of excellent saves to preserve the clean sheet. His standout moment came with a last-ditch intervention, getting his foot to the ball to deflect it wide at full stretch. His distribution was just as impressive — calm, composed, and authoritative. Time and again, he stepped forward as if the ball was drawn to him, launching attacks from deep and setting the tone for our play.
At the heart of the defence was Leo, delivering a man-of-the-match performance of the highest quality. Playing as the sole defender, his maturity was exceptional. His positioning, timing, and ability to read the game were outstanding, cutting out countless attacks — many of which will go unnoticed but were absolutely vital. Time and again, he stayed cool under pressure, like a seasoned player, and consistently found intelligent passes out wide to turn defence into attack. It was a complete defensive performance built on composure, awareness, and leadership.
That platform allowed us to turn the screw. Pressure began to build relentlessly, and much of that was driven by the midfield engine of Ralph and Amir. Amir was phenomenal — covering so much ground it was like having three players in one. His energy, combined with an ever-improving positional awareness, gave us real control in the centre of the pitch. Alongside him, Ralph’s intelligence shone through. His movement, awareness of space, and ability to pick the right pass at the right time gave us a real edge, constantly linking play and keeping us on the front foot. Together, they dominated the midfield battle and provided exactly what was needed in the new system.
Out wide, Oscar was a constant threat down the right, delivering everything you’d want from a winger — pace, strength, tackling, and quality on both feet, along with dangerous crosses into the box and was unlucky not to score. This lad has developed into the most effective right winger in the league and plays the position beautifully. He listens so well, reinforced by the mature defensive display late in the game as Tornadoes became more compact. On the left, Ezra produced another outstanding performance, continuing his incredible development in recent weeks. It is becoming almost impossible to get the ball off him. He plays with the heart of a warrior, combined with a growing football intelligence that is taking his game to another level. Whether driving forward, picking the right pass, or tracking back to support, it was a mature, complete display. His awareness of danger around him and support for his teammates was most impressive.
Despite our dominance, we somehow went into the half time break level at 0-0.
The second half began at a relentless pace, as we came flying out of the traps. Our attacking play became sharper and more potent, with chance after chance being created. Arlo, coming off the bench, made a huge impact. After quickly adapting to a central midfield role at halftime, he showed real maturity and selflessness, driving the team forward, linking play, and consistently finding the right pass. He caused all sorts of problems for the opposition and was unlucky not to win a penalty.
The boost of having the recently injured Jayden on the sideline for the second half, joining the lads alongside his father and coach, helped the lads to no end. We’ve seen something similar at Tottenham with James Maddison boosting the dressing room and, thankfully, we have our own Madders in Bennett. A real team player and leader.
Eventually, the breakthrough arrived. Arlo burst forward on the counterattack and whipped a dangerous cross into the box. The goalkeeper managed to get a slight touch, but not enough to prevent it falling to Ellis, who was perfectly positioned to fire home and open the scoring with his first of the game.
With confidence growing, we continued to press. The second goal soon followed, starting from the back with a great pass played forward into Oscar. He linked up well with Arlo, who drove forward. Showing great awareness, Arlo picked out Ellis in space inside the box. Ellis, captaining the side for the first time this season, led by example throughout — full of energy, intelligent movement, and relentless work rate. He controlled the ball superbly before finishing clinically to secure his second goal of the game, capping off a brilliant individual display.
From there, the team saw the game out with composure and control, securing a fully deserved 2-0 victory and a clean sheet against top-level opposition. It was not just a win — it was a convincing one, built on discipline, intelligence, and teamwork across the pitch.
Without doubt, this was one of the performances of the season. A fantastic effort from all of the lads — something to be incredibly proud of.
