This was our first ever meeting with a Swinton side who were newly demoted to our section. We won the toss and decided to shoot downhill first half on a heavily sloped pitch. The game started quite even with Swinton having more of the ball but Beechy holding firm and looking dangerous through the middle with the long pass, and had a couple of half chances from corners. Swinton took the lead midway through the half with a decent low effort from the edge of the box that went in off the post, Beechy keeper Ty Dobson having no chance. The half continued in the same vein until just before half time when a Swinton effort hit the post, and rolled across the goal line. Keeper Ty seemed to grab the ball on the line with two hands when the Swinton striker followed up to bundle the ball in the net, but no foul was given and we were two down at the break.
We knew the 2nd half would be tougher shooting uphill, but we actually improved 2nd half. The team took on board the advice to play more longer balls forward through Swintons high line and we almost made it count when Dawood Fakeeh was played through, forcing the Swinton keeper into a fantastic double save to stop us from being right back in the game. We were solid defensively the whole half with Aidan Thompson in particular impressive at the back and keeper Ty Dobson making some great saves. Swinton scored again about 5 minutes from the end following a scramble which was unfortunate as we defended really well all half. Even after conceding that goal we still didn't give up and Jayden Lowe was unfortunate not to score when played through, another good save from the Swinton keeper. Swinton deserved the win but we battled well all game and the effort was clear to see.
Player of the Match was really close between two. Dawood Fakeeh was fantastic - his usual workmanlike self, all over the pitch and covering more yards than any player from either side. But he was just pipped to the award today by Aidan Thompson who put in a teriffic performance in particular after moving into defence 2nd half. He showed resilience throughout and was the starting point of many of our attacks from the back. Well done Aidan, and unlucky team. We go again in the cup next week!
