- No goals but great Hurricanes performance!
U9 Hurricanes (Home) v Salford Utd FC Vipers
Saturday 24th February 2018 (10.00am)
Beech Farm Playing Fields #2, Shelley Rd, M27 0PB
Referee: Lucas Morgan
Drew: 0-0 (HT 0-0)
MotM: Oliver Dalton-Bunker
This was the first meeting between the two teams, as the Vipers had previously played in a higher division, so the Hurricanes were expecting a tougher challenge than they had in their convincing win the week before.
The first was a tense, nervy affair with both teams taking time to settle into the game. As the half wore on, the visiting team began to play some confident, flowing football but the Hurricanes worked hard and defended resolutely. While the Vipers dominated possession, the home team limited their chances at goal as Oliver Hall, Dillan Caldwell and captain Jamie Maher in particular remained strong at the back.
After some wise words from manager Ben Robinson and assistant Glen Whitehead over the break, the Hurricanes began the second half more confidently and, while they continued the defend doggedly at times, they also began to pose a threat on the counter-attack as Presley Smith, Jai Devani-White and Daniel Robinson all had chances to break the deadlock.
As the game drew to a close the Vipers went all-out in attack in an attempt to secure a winner but, even when they did manage to breach the Beechfield defence, goalkeeper Oliver Dalton-Bunker did enough to keep their increasingly desperate efforts at bay. In the final seconds, the Hurricanes’ keeper pulled off an important doubles-save that did just enough to earn him the Man of the Match award, and his team a hard-fought draw, with their third consecutive clean sheet.
After the game, manager Ben Robinson said "Judging by the way their manager was applauding us at the end of the game, he must have expected to beat us today?! How wrong he was, but fair play to Salford for giving us a good test. I don't think there has ever been a 0-0 at this age group, so that shows how well the players worked defensively on both teams. Well done to Oliver for MotM".
The Hurricanes squad for the match was: Oliver Dalton-Bunker, Joshua Whitehead, Jamie Maher, Alfie Latham, Oliver Hall, Matthew Elliott, Dillan Caldwell, Jaiesh Devani-White, Presley Smith, Daniel Robinson, Sean Cosgrove.
