POSTED: February 19 2018 15:17:41. By Oscar Courtney - U13 TORNADOES V STRETFORD U13 VICTORIA

Saturday 17th February, Duchy Playing Fields, KO 10am, League.

Having played the best team in the division, last time out, this time the Tornadoes met the second best team in the division!

However, if we needed any convincing that there are tangible signs of progression in the team, then I think this game provided some very promising signs.

For me and Ricky, there can be no doubt that Stretford got out of jail free. We ran them very close and were desperately unlucky not to get at least a draw.

When we last played Stretford, back in November, it was a rout. They were quite disrespectful towards us back then and I think that they presumed that this game would be 'Part Two'.

Therefore, I was very pleased with the lads' effort and work rate in this game. If lessons need to be learned though, it's take your chances when you can. With the exception of Alan, who more than did his bit in bagging 6 goals, we were very wasteful in the first half.

Once Stretford got to full strength, they really put the pressure on and oh how I enjoyed the shouts of their parents to, "put the game to bed now". And of course they went on the assault, with their star man, and raced in to a 3 - 6 lead.

Another lesson to be heeded here is that, at this age group, physical fitness, or at least some pace, is paramount when trying to defend against bigger, faster, skillful opponents.

At this point, Stretford probably thought it was game over and in previous times it might have been. But this time the boys rallied, turned on the style and very deservedly pulled it back to 6 - 6.

How we didn't take the lead I don't know, but at least we made chances. For them, a fortunate rebound, and break of the ball, saw them nick the winner with a few minutes to go.

I was of course dejected that we didn't get at least a point, but I was very happy that the boys didn't let this game doze off for a very comfortable kip.

Don't be too down hearted lads, you showed great spirit and were very unlucky on the day.
Hence the whole team got the MOTM award.

Final score:
Tornadoes 6 -7 Stetford Victoria.
