- WINTON U12 WANDERERS V U12 TORNADOES
Saturday 18th February, Cranbrook Road, KO 11am, League.
To say that the odds were stacked against us in this tie would be an understatement. We only had 8 players, no recognised goalkeeper, a bumpy pitch and a disinterested referee. Coupled with the opposition's insistence on playing with 9 men (which they are perfectly entitled to do) we really found ourselves up against it! Facing the Champions elect, who haven't dropped a point all season, this was always going to be a tough encounter. Therefore, all things considered, I thought the boys, all 8 of them, were absolutely magnificent! The scoreline of 9-3 does look very harsh and is in no way a fair reflection of events on the pitch. As I said the Ref was fairly lax in his approach and coming up against a very street wise team we were always going to struggle. Credit then to the lads for showing a tremendous spirit and work ethic. As I said to them at full time, if they can repeat that level of performance for the rest of the season then they'll have little bother. Although we lost the match 9-3 we did score three very well worked goals, with Max and Harrison (a brace) both finding the net. The third goal in particular was quite special: Max picked the ball up in midfield and evading two challenges got it out to the left to Ronan. Ronan ran down the left before squaring it to Alan who was nearing the D. Alan, very intelligently flicked it on to Harrison, in space to Alan's right, who crashed it first time in to the top right hand corner of the net. Lovely goal! Stand out players, for myself and Ricky, were our two goalkeepers Max and Sam who were absolutely magnificent, as were Jamie and Alan. However, MOTM for this week had to go to Taylor who was composed and intelligent throughout and was very unlucky not to score twice from corners. Final score:
Winton 9 - 3 Tornadoes.
