- Supplementary Cup: Maccabi Vipers v U11s Tornadoes
Sunday 20th March 2016, Bury/Whitefield School, KO 1.15pm
The Tornadoes lined up for this Supplementary Cup clash, against Maccabi Vipers, with a squad of 9 players. Although we had no subs available and a stand in goalkeeper, Callum Looby, in nets, the Tornadoes did fantastically well to race in to an early lead, following a well worked goal from Alan Kay. Sadly, two quick lapses in concentration from Tornado's goal kicks meant that Maccabi soon had the upper hand. Despite some chances spurned the Tornadoes eventually equalised, through Sam Jones, to see the teams going in to the break at level pegging. Despite the conditions being against the boys and not having the luxury of any substitutions the Tornadoes really turned on the style in the second half. Although falling victim to an early 2nd half fluke goal, the Tornadoes continued with their high tempo, accurate passing game and soon found themselves moving away from Maccabi. Two more goals from Alan, a half volley from outside the area from Ronan Courtney and a superb crack from Sam left the Tornadoes very comfortable with 5 minutes to go. This was an excellent, hard working display from all the lads. Their match fitness, effort, teamwork and determination is now finally starting to pay dividends and I for one am totally elated by it! Special mentions must go to our stand in keeper, Callum, who grew in confidence as the game progressed and pulled off several memorable saves. Also to Will Whipday, who marshalled his defence superbly. In addition, the midfield quartet of Alan, Harrison Birkett, Brandon Wabayi and Jamie Butterworth. Alan, Harrison's and Brandon's interplay was a delight to watch as was Jamie's discipline in winning the ball for them and breaking up the opponents play. However, a deserved MOTM award went to Sam Jones who also linked up well with Alan and just kept going all game. His second goal was unstoppable. Well done all!
