- Supplementary Cup: U11s Tornadoes v De La Salle
Saturday 9th April 2016, Beech Farm, KO 10am.
Once again, due to injuries, the Tornadoes found themselves without a recognised goalkeeper. This time Joe Mountcastle manfully stepped up to the plate, acknowledging that he was "doing it for the team"! Playing 'downhill', in the first half, the Tornadoes fell victim to a second ball from a corner that had been initially cleared. However a break with pace involving Alan, Brandon and Will saw Alan squeezing the ball underneath the De La Salle keeper to equalise. However, our joy was to be short lived when De La Salle re-took the lead with a tremendous cross shot from the right wing. What followed just about sums up our luck at the moment: Alan, again breaking from midfield, found himself advancing on the De La Salle goal. However, he was tripped in the D with only the keeper to beat. The resultant free kick, the only sanction permissable at this level, came to nothing. De La Salle then broke up the pitch, avoiding several weak attempts to clear the danger, to notch up their third goal. The second half saw some early promise when Alan went on a fine run to pull us back to 2-3. Unfortunately the momentum was now with De La Salle who went on to score another three goals. That proved to be the death knell for us getting back in to the game and marked the end of our involvement in the this year's Supplementary Cup. All in all it was an average performance against a strong side, hence the concession of 6 goals. Once again there were too many lapses in concentration and a tangible lack of desire as the game progressed. Having said that some of our players showed a decent appetite and left the field with credit. In my post match team talk I asked the boys to look at their own performances and honestly appraise them. We'll examine that feedback at training. Special mentions to Joe M, Jamie, Pat and Brandon but MOTM went to Alan for two quality finishes.
