With confidence high, after starting the season with a stunning home win, the Hurricanes headed into familiar territory as they visited the Barr Hill pitches that had almost become their second home last season. Their opening away game of this season was facing an Aces team against whom they had won one and lost one last year.

As the players took to the pitch it became apparent that the away side were in for a tough game against number of huge Barr Hill players who were considerably larger than some of the Hurricanes’ parents?! However that didn’t appear to deter the visiting team who started brightly and had the majority of the early possession.

Some fast, flowing football and clever passing from the Beechfield players lead to a spell of early pressure and a number of good chances. Good efforts from Oliver Hall, Alfie Rostron and Henry Errington were all parried by the home team’s man-mountain of a goalkeeper who all but filled the relatively small goals that he was protecting.

Just as Barr Hill began to grown in confidence, spurred on by the number of chances they had managed to scramble clear, the Hurricanes managed to find a way through as Alfie Rostron took the ball on a mazy, cross-field dribble before feeding the all out to Oliver Williams who cut in from the left and hammered the ball into the roof of the net to give Beechfield a lead that they thoroughly deserved, with his first league goal of the season.

This lifted the visiting team who again began to dominate possession and fired in chance after chance on the Aces’ goal. It wasn’t too much longer before a shot from distance by Oliver Hall found Alfie Rostron inside the box who responded quickly to flick home from close range. The home team unable to spend very much time in the opposition half at all, and their first half chances on goal were limited to a single, long-range effort which Hurricanes’ goalkeeper Oliver Dalton-Bunker caught comfortably.

The half time whistle came from the referee, who seemed to be carrying an injury and struggling to leave the centre circle, and the players came off for some much-needed refreshment and wise words from their coaching team. This seemed to have an immediate effect as the Hurricanes scored straight from the kick off, within seconds of the start of the second half! Jamie Maher whipped the ball in from the right and Alfie Rostron was on hand once again to fire home for his second goal of the game, and seventh of the season.

The 0-3 lead massively flattered the home team who had their small goalposts, gigantic goalkeeper and incredible good luck to thank for keeping the score-line respectable. The Hurricanes poured forward, dominating possession, with wave after wave of attacking football and were desperately unlucky not to add to their tally. Amaan Khan, Dillan Caldwell, Daniel Robinson and Josh Whitehead all had good efforts which were well saved, narrowly wide or rattled the woodwork.

As the game wore on, the visitors began to tire and seemed to settle for the lead they had earned, so Barr Hill took the opportunity to venture forward in search of a consolation goal. However, their counter-attacks were stifled by some good defensive work from Oliver Hall, Dillan Caldwell and man of the match Fabio Figueiredo. On the odd occasion that the Aces did manage to breach the resolute Beechfield defence, keeper Oliver Dalton-Bunker came off his line quickly to protect a second consecutive clean sheet.

As the immobile referee blew the final whistle, the Hurricanes players almost seemed disappointed that they had not managed to score more goals but should be very satisfied with another dominant performance against a team that had beaten them on this ground at the same stage last season. With two wins from two games, having scored eleven and conceded none, the Beechy lads can consider this to be a very strong start to their Under-10s season.

After the game, manager Ben Robinson said " Well done today boys, another dominating performance. We played some really good football at times against a big, strong Barr Hill Aces. I think we found space really well today and some passes were on point every time. Could have been a lot more goals today but I'm very pleased with the win and another clean sheet. Thanks to all parents for giving me and Glenn a full squad. Well done Fabio on your man of the match award”.

The Hurricanes squad for the match was: Oliver Dalton-Bunker, Dillan Caldwell, Oliver Hall, Jamie Maher, Daniel Robinson, Joshua Whitehead, Henry Errington, Fabio Figueiredo, Amaan Khan, Alfie Rostron and Oliver Williams
